Let me be clear: Yes, yes, and yes again. Your Mac needs protection. Using Gatekeeper, the built-in macOS software that protects you from sophisticated malware and viruses created by cybercriminals, is not enough.
FruitFly, also known as "Quimitchin" by Apple, is a trojan that targets the Mac OS X operating systems. Malwarebytes researchers discovered the trojan through cyberespionage attacks on biomedical research centers. The trojan captures screenshots and connects to webcams in order to steal all data. It is a simple malware code that compromises two files and uses code from an antique system call dating back to 1998. However, it was still possible to go unnoticed for many years. Although the attack vector has not yet been revealed, it is simple to identify and remove. Apple has released an automatic update to address this threat.
